My Creative Space | Learning Crochet

I am currently learning how to crochet. For some reason it is harder for me than knitting. I’ve been watching videos on how to make granny squares & attempting to follow along. I get close, but my squares are too tight. Am I making a mistake in starting with a granny square or should I learn different type of stitches first?

As you can see, I’ve bought a few books in the hunt for one that makes it clearer and for someone who can’t crochet, I have a nice collection of crochet hooks. When I was learning how to knit, I had a wee bit of trouble picking that up but the owner of the local yarn shop recommended a children’s learn to knit booklet from Panda. Bingo! It all started to make sense. I felt a bit silly, but apparently I wasn’t the only adult who found the kids book much easier to follow. Maybe I need a kids book on crochet, too!

It’s all about learning for my creative space this week. Have a look at other creative spaces here at Kootoyoo.

  1. I have a craft book addiction. I just cannot stop purchasing craft books. Anyway to get to the point I am trying to learn how to crochet too and I have purchase Happy Hooker. But I have found a really really (and its clear, easy to read, colourful and fun kids crochet book. Its the best by far) Its called Kids Lean to Crochet by Lucinda Guy & Francois Hall ISBN 978-1-57076-395-3. I order all my books from the Book Depository (however its spelt). Free postage and its quick. Give it a try and let me know how you go.

    Kind regards

  2. I really should read my comment before pressing submit ie spell check and does it make sence. The book if you did not work it out is called Kids Learn (not Lean) to Crochet. I have had a really long day, must have an early night.

  3. Just let the wool flow, you’ll get the hang of it. Just start by doing some chains and see how loose and tight you can get them, you’ll get into a rhythm. One thing to remember with crotchet is different countries have different definitions. This confused be as first. ie dc in aus is tr in usa. This may make a difference to how it ends up looking. Hope this helps. Love the look of your blog btw :-). Thanks for visiting mine. TTFN

  4. Julia – Ah! That sounds like just the book I need! I’ve seen some of her other books and loved the patterns. Thank you so much for the tip!
I’m the same with craft books – cannot stop buying them. They are so pretty and inspiring to read. Hope you had a nice relaxing nights sleep! :)

Mandy – I’ve taken your advice and just chained lots of stitches and it is helping me get used to holding the yarn and crochet hook. Thank you! I’m now practicing the first round of a granny square so I can learn how to crochet more loosely. Thank you for the compliment about my blog, too! :)
