I’ve been thinking about what to write about. What would be exciting? What could I write about that would actually interest other people? I looked down and spied the scarf I’m wearing. It’s not a fancy scarf, it’s knit from a colour changing yarn and is nice and soft. What makes it special to me is that I knitted it and more importantly, I’m wearing it.
You see, I rarely wear what I knit and have lots of special things that I have bought hidden away because I don’t want to ruin them. I want them to stay new and perfect looking. New and perfect and always hidden in a drawer. Never seeing the light of day. I’ll wear them one day, I think to myself, but not today because the place I’m going to might cause them to get marked.
Not very clever thinking. What is the point of having all these special things that are in drawers where I can’t see them or enjoy using them? What if that special day in the future, never arrives and I never wear those hand knit socks or never get to feel just how warm that pretty pink coat is? That would be the biggest shame.
Similar thinking also keeps me from using yarn for new projects because I might knit it wrong and ruin the yarn. So in the end, I end up making nothing and that yarn stays put in the cupboard. I don’t try new things because I might do them wrong and make a mistake.
I want to change and be a little more ready to make mistakes and to use all those special things. That is my challenge to myself over the next week. Use some of that yarn, even if I might muck up the pattern that I am using it for. Wear some of those special clothes. Wear that bracelet.
Later: Okay – I changed it. I used my camera instead of my iPhone. Ah, better. hehe
